Usually when you plug your external hard drive into Mac, you can read and write to files. But chances are this
external hard drive will show read-only on Mac . When you check its information on disk, all that tells me under "Sharing and Permissions" is "You can't read" but there is no option to change this preference. This happens because the drive is formatted with Microsoft's NTFS file system, which macOS does not support by default. Fortunately, it is easy to fix so that your external hard drive is no longer read-only.
There are several ways to unlock an external hard drive on a Mac, from reformatting the drive to installing software that lets you write to NTFS volumes. But first, you need to check if an external hard drive is an NTFS file system in Disk Utility
Step 1: Click Launchpad on your Mac dock and choose Other from the menu.
Step 2: Choose Disk Utility from these utilities and open it.
Step 3: When launched, click on the external hard drive you have a problem in the left sidebar. You will see a "Windows NT file system" visible in the right column.
Then, after making sure that it's the Windows NTFS file system that makes your external hard drive read-only on Mac, you can go ahead and fix it. Try to repair the external hard drive read-only with or without formatting.
Solution 1: format the NTFS external hard drive as exFAT / FAT32
To get started, you need to make sure that you have backed up important files from the external hard drive. Then open Disk Utility as you did before. Select the Seagate external hard drive read-only in the left sidebar. Click the Erase button at the top center of Disk Utility. Fill in the name, format and diagram when prompted by the pop-up window. Click Clear to confirm this operation.
